Good news washes in A St. Thomas shipbuilder says it will be able to retain employees and, possibly, recall laid-off workers after winning a $360,000 contract to build two hydrographic survey launches for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Signed last month, Kanter Marine's order for the two eight-metre boats was announced Thursday at the Barrie Boulevard shipyard by Elgin-Middlesex-London Tory MP Joe Preston. Although Kanter may be better known for the marquee luxury yachts it has built for more than 20 years in Port Stanley and St. Thomas, including a 54-foot, million-dollar sailboat currently under construction for a U.S. buyer, the two launches are not the first -- nor largest -- vessels the company has built for the federal government and RCMP. Nonetheless, Preston said reporters were summoned to the shipyard because yesterday's announcement under Canada's Economic Action Plan, is good news. Preston said the federal government believes it's important to retain skilled labour and industrial capacity through the current downturn. "If we are to build for a prosperous future in Canada, it's critical we invest in our local industries." And Manfred Kanter Jr. said the contracts will keep the builder's eight employees at their jobs through winter. With design completed and building expected to commence as soon as next week, the two aluminum-hulled, twin-outboard vessels are to be delivered in March, 2010, to replace two aging launches in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans fleet in Dartmouth, N.S. They will be used to collect data for charts, as well as science for fisheries management. Under Canada's Economic Action Plan, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard are procuring 60 new boats and are undertaking repair to 40 larger vessels at a cost of $175 million. | July 22, 2010 Ports Burwell, Stanley pursue same submarineJuly 21, 2010 Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in St. ThomasJuly 21, 2010 Housing Partners CelebrateJuly 09, 2010 Government of Canada Invests in LAV III Armoured Vehicles UpgradeJuly 02, 2010 Sub plans remains afloatJuly 01, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 21June 29, 2010 Brandon Card wins 2010 Elgin-Middlesex-London poster challengeJune 29, 2010 City bound to cough up surplusJune 25, 2010 Opening of Steen Disc Park in AylmerJune 24, 2010 Canada Day Events 2010June 23, 2010 Port Stanley Beach Flying the Blue FlagJune 11, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 20June 11, 2010 FedDev Ontario supporting southern Ontario economic recoveryJune 11, 2010 Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in St. ThomasJune 04, 2010 Government of Canada creates summer jobs in Elgin-Middlesex-LondonJune 04, 2010 Government of Canada creates summer jobs in Elgin-Middlesex-LondonJune 03, 2010 New St. Thomas FM Radio Station?May 28, 2010 Housing to fill needMay 28, 2010 Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in Elgin CountyMay 28, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 19May 17, 2010 Enerworks- CAFMay 14, 2010 Township of Southwold celebrates improvements to the municipal officeMay 12, 2010 FedDev Ontario Applied Research and Commercialization Imitative Great Opportunity for Elgin-Middlesex-LondonMay 11, 2010 Preston supports legislation to eliminate pardons for serious crimesMay 10, 2010 Project promises to produce jobs * BUSINESS INCUBATOR: Feds give $800,000May 08, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 18May 08, 2010 Government of Canada announces support for the 2010 International Plowing and Rural ExpoMay 07, 2010 Joe Preston Announces New Business Incubator for St. Thomas and Elgin CountyApril 20, 2010 Divestiture decision imminent![]() July 01, 2010
