Posted By KYLE REA TIMES-JOURNAL Much like an incubator helps to hatch baby chicks, St. Thomas-Elgin now has an organization to nurture new business. It's called a business incubator and comes courtesy of $800,000 from the federal government through the Community Adjustment Fund. The project was announced at St. Thomas city hall on Friday. Received by the St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation, the goal is to find a building in which to offer help for businesses in the service, light manufacturing and retail sectors. The EDC hopes to have a site in place by September. "This is about helping people get into business and helping business to be successful," said Joe Preston, Conservative MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London. Business incubators offer administrative assistance, meeting facilities, office space and business counselling to help entrepreneurs hit the ground running and keep going. Not all applicants are accepted and entrepreneurs have to apply and meet a set of criteria. "This will fabulously go a long way to create new jobs for our community," said Dennis Broome, EDC president. He noted 80% of all new jobs in Canada are created by small business, but 70% of entrepreneurs fail within the first three to five years due to lack of funding and support. By providing help, an incubator will help support and maintain those businesses, he noted. The long-term impact could be huge, explained Helen Haddow, president of the Elgin Business Resource Centre. She said the success rate for a small business after 10 years is 70%. But with the business incubator, that number jumps to 90%-plus. "This is a much-needed facility in this area. It will provide additional services for entrepreneurs and businesses that will help them succeed and give them a better start in the business world," she said. Mayor Cliff Barwick welcomed the announcement. He noted the days when a plant would come into St. Thomas and hire 1,000 people at once are probably over. "The backbone of the economy has to be the idea person, the person who has the idea and is going to formulate a business plan and put that business plan into action. Many of these people don't have the funds to get started but now there's an opportunity for that funding," he said. "We look forward to this incubator and new jobs in St. Thomas.” | September 01, 2010 Government of Canada helps grow TREE FARM in Elgin CountySeptember 01, 2010 Government of Canada invests in business expansion to boost economy, create jobsSeptember 01, 2010 Government of Canada helps grow Tree Farm in Elgin CountySeptember 01, 2010 Harper to open $11M gatewayAugust 26, 2010 Believer seeks OHIP coverageAugust 26, 2010 Attraction gets boostAugust 24, 2010 Government of Canada supports local businesses in the Sand Plains RegionAugust 16, 2010 Port Burwell lands subAugust 13, 2010 Details on big sub hammered outAugust 12, 2010 Deadline looms on sub site or federal funds could be lostAugust 12, 2010 Legislative ReportAugust 11, 2010 Battle for the subAugust 10, 2010 Meeting tonightAugust 09, 2010 Funds OK'dAugust 06, 2010 Government of Canada invests in community environmental Projects in OntarioAugust 06, 2010 History book tells the story of West Elgin in the time of warAugust 04, 2010 The Government of Canada supports accessibility for all CanadiansJuly 22, 2010 Ports Burwell, Stanley pursue same submarineJuly 21, 2010 Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in St. ThomasJuly 21, 2010 Housing Partners CelebrateJuly 09, 2010 Government of Canada Invests in LAV III Armoured Vehicles UpgradeJuly 02, 2010 Sub plans remains afloatJuly 01, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 21July 01, 2010 CANADA DAY IN FULL SWING THROUGHOUT ELGIN-MIDDLESEX-LONDONJune 29, 2010 Brandon Card wins 2010 Elgin-Middlesex-London poster challengeJune 29, 2010 City bound to cough up surplusJune 25, 2010 Opening of Steen Disc Park in AylmerJune 24, 2010 Canada Day Events 2010June 23, 2010 Port Stanley Beach Flying the Blue FlagJune 11, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 20June 11, 2010 FedDev Ontario supporting southern Ontario economic recoveryJune 11, 2010 Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in St. ThomasJune 04, 2010 Government of Canada creates summer jobs in Elgin-Middlesex-LondonJune 04, 2010 Government of Canada creates summer jobs in Elgin-Middlesex-LondonJune 03, 2010 New St. Thomas FM Radio Station?May 28, 2010 Housing to fill needMay 28, 2010 Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in Elgin CountyMay 28, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 19May 17, 2010 Enerworks- CAFMay 14, 2010 Township of Southwold celebrates improvements to the municipal officeMay 12, 2010 FedDev Ontario Applied Research and Commercialization Imitative Great Opportunity for Elgin-Middlesex-LondonMay 11, 2010 Preston supports legislation to eliminate pardons for serious crimesMay 10, 2010 Project promises to produce jobs * BUSINESS INCUBATOR: Feds give $800,000May 08, 2010 The Preston Post Issue 18May 08, 2010 Government of Canada announces support for the 2010 International Plowing and Rural ExpoMay 07, 2010 Joe Preston Announces New Business Incubator for St. Thomas and Elgin CountyApril 20, 2010 Divestiture decision imminent![]() July 01, 2010
