FINGAL — An official ceremony today marked the undertaking of improvements and addition to the local municipal office in the Township of Southwold. Joe Preston, MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London; Steve Peters, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London; and James McIntyre, Mayor of the Township of Southwold, were pleased to see this important Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) project underway. The project includes the renovation of the current office space and construction of an addition, resulting in an additional 2,860 sq ft of office space, almost tripling the floor space within the office The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each committed up to $168,000.00 to the project. The Township of Southwold received a donation from the Green Lane Trust Fund for the balance of the project’s total budgeted cost of $504,000.00. “The Township will be able to make their office more accessible to their constituents to better serve the community,” said MP Preston. "Having a good home for staff to do all the hard work behind the scenes that makes a municipality run well is incredibly important," Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Steve Peters said. "I am glad that the provincial government could help the Township of Southwold with this project. Supporting our local municipalities by investing in their infrastructure needs just makes good sense, both now and for the future." “The Township of Southwold is thankful for the federal and provincial governments’ contributions to this project as well as the donation from Green Lane Trust Fund,” said Mayor McIntyre. “Improvements to the offices will provide greater accessibility for all of our residents with all of our staff on one floor and office space that meets the requirements of those with special needs.” Under the ISF program, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working together with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and local partners to respond to local needs through infrastructure upgrades.
