Where does one berth a 1,400 ton submarine, standing more than five storeys high and stretching approximately 300 feet in length?
Central Elgin Mayor Tom Marks has a few ideas and is willing to share them at a public meeting 7 p.m. today at Last Post Branch 410, Royal Canadian Legion, Port Stanley.
"The submarine is definitely on our radar and has been since the possibility was first brought to council," Marks stressed.
Marks said Central Elgin is not interested in keeping the sub in the water in Port Stanley, since it could affect the environmental risk assessment the municipality must go through as part of its acquisition of the harbour from the feds.
There is also debate about how the huge submarine can fit on the shoreline and not interfere with the view of the harbour, Marks noted.
He said Central Elgin has been busy discussing potential locations since a June 15 presentation to council by the Elgin Military Museum.
Since that date, Marks pointed out:
- Council requested Dillon Engineering provide feedback on potential impacts on an environmental risk assessment for the harbour;
- Central Elgin initiated discussions on how the sub would fit into the harbour development;
- The municipality asked its lawyers to prepare a letter of intent with the Elgin Military Museum;
- A meeting was arranged between the harbour divestiture committee and the Elgin Military Museum to discuss possible locations;
- Central Elgin met with Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Joe Preston to discuss options for placing the sub in Port Stanley; and
- A special meeting of council was convened July 12 where a resolution approving further discussions with the Elgin Military Museum was passed.
