Today, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, the Honourable Diane Finley, announced that the government will table legislation on Wednesday to help long-time workers who lost their jobs because of the global recession.
These measures will help ensure that these long tenured worker who have paid into the EI System for years are provide the help they need while they search for new employment. This legislation would provide from five (5) to twenty (20) weeks of additional benefits, depending on how long an eligible individual has been working and paying into EI.
Joe Preston, Member of Parliament stated “families of Elgin-Middlesex-London will especially benefit from these proposed changes; Our manufacturing employees have been the hardest hit.”
This temporary measure would be phased out gradually as the economy improves.
