Government Happenings As of January 31, self-employed Canadians are able to register for the Employment Insurance (EI) program, which will extend to them maternity, parental, sickness and compassionate care benefits, collectively called special benefits. The Fairness for the Self‑Employed Act extends EI special benefits to self-employed Canadians. This measure responds to the Government’s 2008 pledge to help provide improved economic security and support for all those who are self-employed. With these changes, self-employed Canadians will be able to voluntarily opt into the EI program and receive special benefits. Overall, the special benefits for self-employed individuals mirror those currently available to salaried employees under the EI program. Mayors, CAO/CEOs and representatives from the EDC and EBRC took part in the open discussion. The discussions focused on the programs that were introduced in the 2009 budget and their effects on the municipalities and surrounding areas. One day earlier, Joe met with farmers representing different sectors including Grains and Oilseeds, Hogs, Cattle and Pork. Information from the discussions has been prepared to bring forward to the Minister of Finance. http://www.joeprestonmp.ca/EN/3634/105452 Through the Canada Revenue Agency Volunteer Tax Program, clinics will be open to low-income individuals and families. Volunteers received updated training on February 4th reviewing many of the additional benefits available in 2009 including the Home Renovation Tax Credit and the First-Time Homebuyers Plan. Information on dates, times and locations will be available in the upcoming weeks. Citizen Recognition "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." Henry Ford Tony Bendel of Rogers Cable 13, proved just that. On Friday, January 29th, Tony pulled community leaders together including Joe Preston, Steve Peters, Cliff Barwick, Bill Lynch and many others, at Wendy’s Restaurant to raise money for Haiti. Over $1500 was raised in less than 2 hours. Funds will be matched by the Federal Government. Congratulations Tony.
