Funding to benefit local road infrastructure

Township of Malahide, Ontario
- Joe Preston, Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London, and His Worship John R. Wilson, Mayor of the Township of Malahide, today announced that residents of Malahide will benefit from improved road infrastructure thanks to an investment of more than $553,000 from the Government of Canada through the federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF).

“The Government of Canada understands the need for municipalities to be able to plan their infrastructure projects over the long term,” said MP Preston. “That is why this Government is making the Gas Tax Fund a permanent measure, at
$2 billion nationally, in 2014. This helps all municipalities better plan budgets and projects.”

“As a result of the federal government’s Gas Tax funding, the municipality has been able to complete a “Roads Needs Study”, purchase technical equipment for a G.I.S. (Geographic Information System) project and partially pay for two tri-axle dump trucks,” said Mayor Wilson. “The resulting amount of over $550,000 has been a much needed cash injection allowing our Township to accomplish tasks that we felt might be unattainable.”

Funding will support the purchase of more energy efficient trucks, which will enable the municipality to reduce its footprint on the environment. Due to the increased capacity of these trucks, the Township can deliver more material to road construction sites by using less fuel.

In addition, a portion of the Township’s GTF allocation was put towards a Roads Need Study, including an extensive inspection of large bridges and culverts. The resulting report will provide a standard measurement of maintenance, rehabilitation and construction to help guide future decision making.

“The federal Gas Tax Fund acknowledges that all orders of government must work together to address the pressing need for infrastructure investment in Ontario,” said Peter Hume, President of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). “The funding is supporting thousands of important infrastructure projects and is critical to job creation, Ontario’s competiveness and environmental sustainability.”

Under the Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is allocating
$12 billion to infrastructure projects across the country. This is complemented by an earlier $33 billion infrastructure commitment under the Building Canada Plan.  From 2010 to 2014, the Township of Malahide will receive close to $1,083,196 in Gas Tax Fund support.
