MP Preston Supports Protection of Property rights
October 31, 2007

OTTAWA, ON – Joe Preston, Member of Parliament for Elgin–Middlesex–London, seconded a motion last evening to entrench property rights in Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Originally tabled in April of this year by Dean Allison MP for Niagara West – Glanbrook, Motion 315 on the House of Commons Order Paper if passed will amend Section 7 of the Charter.

The motion reads, “that, in the opinion of the House, the government should amend Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom to extend property rights to Canada.”

“I am pleased to stand behind this motion and ensure that it moves forward in the House of Commons. Protection of property rights is extremely important for those living in rural Canada and Elgin – Middlesex – London. This ensures that Canadians have the right to own property,” MP Preston said.

This motion takes steps towards a formal definition and protection of property rights for Canada, where currently no constitutional provision exists. Further, the motion has the intention of giving individual property owners the right to fair compensation for their property and ensures compensation within a reasonable time period.
